Porsche CDR24 Radio Code & PROTECT Repair Service

Porsche CDR24
Becker BE 6645
997 645 128 06

As originally fitted to the:

Porsche Boxster 987.1
2004 > 2008

If you are trying to fit this radio to a different vehicle, then you may find yourself with the Error message of "PROTECT". This stereo is electronically paired, or "Married" to the engine management system of the vehicle it came out of using very sophisticated MOST-BUS system technology.

When it is first powered up, it will communicate with the vehicle, and a message of "PORSCHE" will appear on the display whilst this process is in operation. If communication has been successful, it will then operate in the normal way.

However, if removed and refitted into a different vehicle other than the original one, it will not recognize the encrypted MOST-BUS identification of the new car, and will instead display an error message of "PROTECT" after around 30 seconds.

This Radio cannot therefore be transferred from one car to another, unless it has first been reset back into its original "Delivery Mode" with the internal MOST-BUS data memory reprogrammed for use with the new vehicle.

Porsche Dealers may tell you that this stereo cannot be reprogrammed to go into another vehicle, but then that's what they said about other models, before we managed to reset the MOST-BUS PROTECT system !!

We can reset the PROTECT Error message for this radio, allowing it to be used in a different vehicle, but you will need to send the unit to our workshop for this work to be carried out. Approx turnaround time is 48 hours from receipt to dispatch.

Removal of the radio is fairly straightforward. This radio is bolted in place by four side clips, and these will be hidden behind the dashboard trim. Removal of the trim will depend largely on the vehicle it is fitted to, but should not present any real problems. Please consult your service manual if you are unsure how to go about this. Once the four clips that secure the radio frame have been rotated, the stereo will come out in a rather large lump and can then be unplugged.

Common Faults: Steering Controls Unresponsive

For those of you with steering controls fitted, whilst we will try to retain the original settings for these, there are instances following the reset where the controls may no longer function. This is largely because some of the configuration settings can only be performed whilst the unit is in the car. In this instance we would advise you to visit your local Porsche specialist for a few moments on their diagnostic system - its a very quick setting that needs to be applied.

Common Faults: No Audio

For those of you with the upgraded sound systems fitted such as Harmon or BOSE, whilst we will try to retain the original settings for these, there are some instances following the reset where the audio output may not be correctly configured for your upgraded system. This is largely because some of the configuration settings can only be performed whilst the unit is in the car. In this instance we would advise you to visit your local Porsche specialist for a few moments on their diagnostic system - its a very quick setting that needs to be applied.
